Basha began in two kitchens (one in Kerala, one in Belgium) and a long correspondence about what a curry should taste like. Shalet grew up in Kerala, surrounded by the smell of curry leaves hitting hot oil. Babitha was adopted from Kerala, raised in Belgium, and spent years trying to find the flavour she half-remembered.
The first jar was for the two of them. The second was for friends. The thirtieth sold out in ten days, and by then we'd realised the recipe wasn't ours alone; it belonged to the cooks we'd learned it from, and to anyone who'd cook it next. Today we deliver our handmade curry pastes across Belgium: Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, Bruges, Leuven and beyond.
The name Bhasha means language in Malayalam. Taste, we think, is exactly that: a language anyone can learn, in twenty minutes, from a single jar.
